Opening Night and Day 1
The Lakme Fashion Week 2013 Winter/Festive season got underway in Mumbai on 23rd August with the Opening Night by Manish Malhotra on 22nd.

Manish Malhotra showcased his collection 'Reflections' at the opening night of the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013. Expectedly, there was a lot of Bollywood presence. Manish's vibrant festive collection was inspired by the hues of Rajasthan and Kutch. Manish showcased the stylish 'ghagra-pant' - a fusion of the Sharara and classic pant - which is touted to give some alternatives to the traditional 'lehengas'.
Nikhil Thampi showcased a semi-Indian collection inspired by his grandmother’s wardrobe. His line comprised full-length lehengas with prints, wrap-around skirts, stylish short saris and long kurtas among other things.He used traditional Indian fabrics with new age designs. The clothes were complemented by accessories, which were influenced by those worn by Kathakali dancers. The Indo punk accessories cannot go unnoticed.
'Shift' By Nimish Shah
'Shift' By Nimish Shah Presented Arty Urban Chic Fashion At Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013 and arty urban chic it was from floral prints to wrap skirts to suits. The colors were sombré.
Nishka Lulla
Nishka Lulla's collection was for the fashion savvy intellectual. Nishka kept things simple.
Vijay Balhara
Vijay Balhara presented a glamorous line of western wear through his collection called 'Muted Monologue' (muted shades of white and mint among blush, olive and khaki). Gliding down the ramp were models displaying maxis, gowns, skirts with slits and minis, mint jacket with sequined midi and long tulip skirt worn with glitzy blouses.
Payal Singhal
Payal Singhal presented her collection “Char Bagh”(translated as four Persian-style garden layouts) that featured whimsical, detailed pieces bringing together the East and the West. It represented “Mumbai Meets New York” with the use of deep and neutral colors as well as intricate detailing. This Indo fusion pret collection is very much wearable. It is as much comfort as much making a statement.
Jatin Varma
Jatin Varma's collection 'From Eden To Paradise' was for women who want to dress in a sensual and seductive manner. He divided the collection into four colors; blue, pink, purple and red. It was a very artsy and enchanting collection.
Debarun Mukherjee
Designer Debarun Mukherjee presented a classic yet contemporary collection called 'Ba-Dastoor (Like Always)'. He showcased a line of sarees, lehengas, layered dresses, kurtas and churidars, long printed flared jacket with tunic and churidar for women and short jackets, kurtas, bundgalas, long flared coats and suits for men. He worked around beige, ivory, red and nude tones for the traditional style inspiration.
Shilpa Reddy
Designer Shilpa Reddy presented a spectacular collection that was inspired by Thailand's warrior mother and queen 'Suriyothai'. Inspired by the 16th century legendary queen of Siam (now Thailand), Reddy's collection showcased aspects of feminine strength through the garments on the ramp. Thai influences were seen on the shoulders and necklines. Some of the fabrics were embellished with embroidery and stone work inspired by Thai jewellery,
Priyadarshini Rao
Priyadarshini Rao’s travelers inspired 'Caravan Serai' collection revealed a vibrant mix of cultures through textiles, hues, prints and silhouettes.
Gen Next Show
The designers who showcased as part of the Gen Next platform were Aditi Holani, Aiman Agha and Armaan Randhawa, Nitin Chawla, Pronoy Kapoor and Rixi Bhatia and Jayesh Sachdev, who design under the Quirk Box label.
Ranna Gill
Ranna Gill's collection was inspired by the beautiful island of Mauritius. She used the wonderful colors of the island form shades of water to that of the sun, form azure blue to balmy green to golden yellow. A perfect resort collection that included kaftans, micro shorts, hot pants and of course maxis.
Anita Dongre
Anita Dongre's collection 'Jaipur Bride 2013' was colorful and built around the idea of a bold, modern, free spirited independent woman. She used extensive mirror work and gold embroidery on her choli and lehengas that are surely doing to be a hit this wedding season. This Rajasthan-inspired collection portrayed the myriad moods of Anita’s bridal muse – Nayantara, a young, effervescent girl who challenges convention, yet loves all things traditional. The collection was inspired by the Jantar Mantar with the ensembles shaped by linear symmetry and embroidered in geometric shapes and patterns.
Anita Dongre’s menswear collection 'Anshuman' was classic and elegant.
Celeb Spotting:
Several B-town celebrities graced the front row on the first day of Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013.
Actress Urmila Matondkar stunned in an ink blue 50’s inspired lace dress by AND. While Juhi Chawla looked ravishing in a yellow georgette anarkali with a net dupatta, Gul Panag turned on the heat wearing a black georgette saree. Sangeeta Bijilani looked years younger in a black jumpsuit by AND accessorized with a Anita Dongre silver neckpiece.
Kalki Koechlin (in Shift), Genelia D'Souza, Richa Chadda, Shenaz Treasurywala, Purab Kohli, Anushka Manchanda, Neeta Lulla and Roshni Chopra were among other celebs who attended the fashion gala.
